100 North Main, Memphis

100 North Main, Memphis

Known as the tallest building in Memphis, 100 North Main is a 430-foot, 37-story skyscraper that borders Adams Street, North Second Street, and North Main Street. Locals often referred to the structure as the “UP” or the “Union Planters” building due to its former tenants, the Union Planters Bank. The building designer of the modernist structure was Robert Lee Hall. Construction was completed in 1965. The building is very similar in design to the 633 Building in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

100 North Main cuts an impressive figure against the Memphis skyline and offers an impressive view of the city. Two of the best features of the building were the revolving, but now vacant, restaurant on the top floor and the Japanese garden. In addition, the building contains a pool and a multi-level parking garage. The rooftop garden was closed in 1971 and the revolving restaurant has remained vacant for the last 10 years.

Lack of demand for commercial office space has caused the value of the building to decline. As of 2011, 30% of the building is unoccupied. Currently, it is the headquarters of the SunTrust Bank. The authors of the book, Memphis: An Architectural Guide named the building "one of the least interesting" downtown structures.
