Malkata, Luxor

Malkata was the royal palace city of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, built in the 14th century BCE as a residence, administrative center, and ceremonial complex. Known as the “House of Rejoicing,” it was unusual because it placed a living royal city on the west side of the Nile, an area more often linked with tombs and the afterlife.

Although most buildings were made of mudbrick and survive mainly as low remains, excavations have revealed palaces, halls, workshops, storage areas, and unusual wavy mudbrick walls that helped strengthen thin partitions. Finds such as painted plaster, pottery labels, glass-making debris, and wine-jar inscriptions show a busy palace economy, with craftsmen, officials, and supplies moving through the complex.

Malkata was also linked to Birket Habu, a huge artificial lake used for royal ceremonies and festivals. During Amenhotep III’s Heb-Sed celebrations, the lake and palace landscape helped present the pharaoh’s power, renewal, and connection with the sun god. Today, the site offers a rare view of royal life beyond temples and tombs.
