Valley of the Queens, Luxor

The Valley of the Queens is a royal burial ground created during the New Kingdom for queens, princes, princesses, and other members of the royal family. Ancient Egyptians called the area Ta-Set-Neferu, often translated as “Place of Beauty.” Over ninety tombs have been found here, mainly from the 18th to 20th Dynasties. Cut into the desert hills, they reveal royal burial customs and beliefs about the afterlife.

Many of the tombs contain painted scenes, hieroglyphic texts, and images of deities associated with protection and rebirth. These decorations were intended to guide and safeguard the deceased on their journey into the next world. The best-known burial is Queen Nefertari’s tomb, famous for its vivid paintings.
