Maltings, York

The Maltings is a traditional pub in the heart of York, on Tanner's Moat. Originally opened in 1842 as the Railway Tavern, this pub boasts a rich history closely tied to the city's development. Its proximity to York railway station and Lendal Bridge has shaped its story, influencing its patronage and evolution through the centuries.

Historically named the Railway Tavern to cater to travelers from the newly opened York railway station, the pub experienced a surge in business with the opening of nearby Lendal Bridge. However, the subsequent relocation of the railway station saw a dip in its fortunes. Adapting to changes, it was renamed the Lendal Bridge Hotel in 1885, serving not just as a pub but also as an inn providing rooms for travelers and even hosting inquests into deaths. By 1902, the establishment was noted for its smoke room, tap room, and serving bar, highlighting its role as a community hub.

The current name, The Maltings, was adopted when Anita Adams bought the property in 1992 from Bass, bringing a fresh era to this historic venue. Under her ownership, The Maltings has continued to excel, once being named Yorkshire Pub of the Year, reflecting its commitment to quality and service.

Today, The Maltings offers a welcoming traditional English pub setting where visitors can enjoy a variety of cask ales, beers, and traditional ciders, including the exclusive house specialty, Black Sheep Bitter. The pub features a rotating selection of six guest beers, ensuring new tastes on every visit. Aside from its impressive drinks menu, The Maltings serves up good, inexpensive pub grub complemented by a variety of entertainment options, including live music, quiz nights, and sports screenings.
