King George VI famously said, “The history of York is the history of England.”

York’s Old Town is a remarkably well-preserved historic centre where more than 2,000 years of history unfold through its streets, buildings and ancient walls. Despite its relatively small size, the Old Town is packed with rich heritage, attracting visitors from around the world.

The story begins in AD 71, when the Romans established the legionary fortress of Eboracum at the junction of the Rivers Ouse and Foss. It became an important military and political centre, and traces of the Roman street plan still influence the modern city.

After Roman rule ended, York developed into an important Anglian religious and political centre, known as Eoforwic. Christianity became firmly established in the 7th century, and the predecessor of today’s York Minster was founded. In 866, a Viking army captured the city and transformed it into the capital of a Viking kingdom. Scandinavian settlement left a lasting mark on York, influencing its streets, property boundaries and place names.

Following the Norman Conquest, York became an important centre of royal power and trade. The Normans strengthened its defences, while the Minster was rebuilt on an increasingly grand scale. During the 13th and 14th centuries, much of the surviving city wall was rebuilt in stone.

Medieval York flourished through trade, crafts and religious activity. Its narrow streets, timber-framed buildings and bustling marketplaces developed during this period, many of which contribute to the city’s distinctive character today.

Later centuries brought Georgian architecture, Victorian improvements and the railway, but much of the ancient street pattern survived. Today, the Old Town offers an extraordinary mixture of Roman foundations, Viking heritage, medieval streets, Gothic architecture and later buildings.

With its maze of historic streets, many too narrow for vehicles, and attractions packed closely together, York is ideally suited to exploring on foot. Fascinating details can be found around almost every corner.
