Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church), Aachen
Aachen Cathedral was built around the year 800 on the order of Charlemagne as part of his palace complex. It served as his private chapel and had a strong political role. Between 936 and 1531, more than 30 German kings were crowned here, giving the church lasting importance in medieval history.
The core of the cathedral is the Palatine Chapel, known for its octagonal shape. This central design was inspired by Byzantine architecture, especially churches in Ravenna and Constantinople. Marble columns, bronze railings, and rich decorative details show the influence of imperial architecture rather than local parish churches. In the 14th century, a large Gothic choir was added to the east. Its tall windows and glass walls strongly contrast with the compact octagon and were built to display important relics.
Inside, the two main building phases are easy to recognize. The octagon feels compact and structured, while the Gothic choir is tall and filled with light. The treasury holds important objects, including the shrine of Charlemagne and the Marian shrine, both central to medieval pilgrimages. The church is still used for worship and also helps visitors understand early medieval power, art, and architecture.
