Marschiertor (Marching Gate), Aachen
Marschiertor is one of the best-preserved gates from the medieval city wall. It was built around the middle of the 13th century, when the city was protected by walls, towers, and controlled entrances. This gate stood on the southeastern side and guarded an important route used by traders, travelers, and soldiers. Its name is linked to marching troops, who often passed through here when leaving or entering the city.
The building was designed for defense rather than comfort. Two round towers stand on either side of a central passage, with thick stone walls and narrow openings. Elements of the old defenses, including the gate passage and drawbridge area, are still visible. Inside, a small courtyard allowed guards to control access, while the upper floors were used for guards and storage, making the gate function like a small fortress.
As city walls lost their defensive role, many were removed, but this gate remained standing. It was repaired over time and reused instead of being demolished. Today, a local carnival society maintains the building and uses its rooms for meetings and events, while visitors can still see how medieval city defenses controlled movement in and out of the city.
