Theater Aachen (Aachen Municipal Theatre), Aachen

Theater Aachen (Aachen Municipal Theatre), Aachen

Theater Aachen has been part of local cultural life for about 200 years. Work on the first theatre building began in 1822, and it opened on May 15, 1825. The opening night featured Louis Spohr’s opera Jessonda, which shows that opera was important here from the start. Over time, the theatre became a regular place for music, drama, and public events, not only for special occasions.

The building is based on classicism and was originally designed by Johann Peter Cremer and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. In 1901, architect Heinrich Seeling made major changes to improve stage technology and audience comfort, while keeping the classicist structure.

During the Second World War, the theatre was almost completely destroyed in a bombing on July 14, 1943. It was rebuilt between 1948 and 1951 and reopened on December 23, 1951, with Richard Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Today, the program includes opera, drama, ballet, and concerts. The main hall offers clear views and good acoustics, while smaller stages are used for more intimate or experimental productions.
