Memorial of Justice of Pernambuco, Recife
The Memorial of Justice of Pernambuco is housed in the former Estação do Brum, a railway station later adapted for cultural use. The building was repurposed starting in 1997, transferred to the Court of Justice in 1999, and opened as the memorial in 2001. Its eclectic architecture includes iron elements imported from Europe and is protected as a heritage site.
Inside, the memorial serves as the memory center of the Pernambuco Judiciary, holding a collection of more than 200,000 items. These include documents, photographs, furniture, and objects related to legal practice across different periods. Exhibition rooms present materials connected to court procedures, notable trials, and institutional routines. The long-term exhibition Uma Questão de Justiça, inaugurated in 2009, organizes these themes through curated displays and reconstructed environments.
The exhibitions also address broader social contexts, with sections dedicated to subjects such as slavery, capoeira, and the Cangaço, showing how legal processes intersected with cultural and political realities. The memorial functions as an educational space, offering guided visits, temporary exhibitions, and public programs focused on law and citizenship.
