Museu Militar do Forte de Brum (Military Museum of Fort Brum), Recife

Museu Militar do Forte de Brum (Military Museum of Fort Brum), Recife

The Museu Militar do Forte de Brum occupies a 17th-century fortification built during the Dutch presence in northeastern Brazil, with construction beginning around 1629. It was part of a defensive network controlling access to the harbor and protecting trade routes. After 1654, the fort was reinforced and adapted to changing military strategies.

The structure has a compact layout with thick stone walls, angular bastions, and a central courtyard. These features were designed to resist artillery and monitor the surroundings. Inside, visitors can see storage rooms, guard areas, and circulation paths that reflect daily routines. Later changes from the colonial and imperial periods remain visible, showing the fort’s evolution.

The museum presents military history from the colonial period to the 20th century, with displays of weapons, uniforms, ammunition, and communication equipment. Maps and models explain regional conflicts, while cannons along the walls face the water, showing the fort’s strategic role. Guided visits and educational activities add context to the site’s military function.
