Mercado la Acocota (Acocota Market), Puebla

The "Carmen Serdán" Market commonly called "La Acocota" is a traditional market in the Barrio de la Luz, with an extraordinary variety of fresh products.

In the Analco pattern of 1773 there are two blocks named Calle del Cocote and Calle 2da. del Cocote respectively, in the Census Book of the same year the lots of Doña Felipa "la Cocota" are mentioned as being located on the south sidewalk of this street. The Aztec word "cocotl" means throat and as a nickname for a person is perhaps equivalent to gobbler or gobbler . The disfigured shape of Calle de la Acocota can be seen in the registers of 1832 and 1902, in 1845 and 1847, in the 1852 Guide and in all the plans and nomenclatures of the 20th century, from the 1908 plan . knows from the Outsiders Guide of 1852, that there were 9 cemiteros, that is, bakers dedicated to making cemitas, and 6 of them were in the street of "La Cocota". From those years comes the tradition of making typical Pueblan bread in that area, which is now sold in this market.

Here you can find the traditional mole pastes of various types: poblano, pipían, peanut , etc. You can also buy the ingredients and go to the mill -across the street- to make your own pasta. In the market there are food stalls prepared with typical dishes, such as cemitas, quesadillas or poblano stews.
