Mercado Norte (North Market), Cordoba
Mercado Norte grew out of Plaza Marchena, a busy open-air trading area once crowded with vendors, wagons, and sulkys before the current building opened on April 14, 1928. Moving the market indoors helped improve hygiene, traffic, and food distribution at a time when the nearby railway made it easier to bring in seafood from the Atlantic, fruit from northern provinces, and other fresh goods from across Argentina.
Designed by Hortal and Godoy, the concrete-and-iron building was planned as a major commercial centre. Inside, butchers, fishmongers, produce sellers, bakeries, and small food stalls still serve residents, chefs, and restaurant owners. Many professionals arrive early to choose meat cuts, fresh fish, cured products, and regional ingredients before the busiest hours begin.
Food is the main reason to visit. Alongside traditional beef, pork, fiambres, and cabrito from the mountain region, the market also reflects immigrant food traditions, especially through small Lebanese and Armenian counters. Seafood also stands out, with family businesses like Fazzio linking fresh fish to local market life far from the coast.
