Moraca River, Podgorica

Moraca River, Podgorica

The Morača River is a significant waterway in Montenegro that holds both historical and geographical importance. Originating in the northern region near Mount Rzača in the Kolašin Municipality, the river flows for approximately 99.5 kilometers (61.8 miles) before eventually reaching Lake Skadar. Its expansive drainage basin covers an area of 3,257 square kilometers.

In its upper course, the Morača River is characterized by its fast-flowing nature as it winds its way through the mountains. As it approaches the city of Podgorica, it merges with its largest tributary, the Zeta River. Together, they carve out a rocky canyon before entering the Zeta plain. The river continues to flow through the surrounding flatlands until it finally empties into Lake Skadar, which lies on the border with Albania. Conversely, the Bojana River, another prominent watercourse, runs through the northwest corner of Albania before joining the Adriatic Sea at Ada Bojana.

Compared to other rivers of similar length, the Morača River possesses relatively low volume. It is typically no wider than 50 meters (160 feet) and is mostly shallow, rendering it unsuitable for navigation. However, its canyon serves as a natural corridor for the main road connecting the Montenegrin Littoral to Podgorica and onward to northern Montenegro and Serbia. While this road is considered impassable on foot, it plays a crucial role in transportation.

The Morača River holds significant cultural value as it is one of the symbols, attractions, and notable physical geographical features of Podgorica. It serves as the city's principal river and is often depicted on national symbols and flags. Located just north of the river's canyon is the Morača Monastery, a historic site founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić. The monastery's presence adds to the river's allure and historical significance.
