Mount Mary Basilica, Mumbai

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, which is more commonly referred to as Mount Mary Church, stands as a Roman Catholic Basilica situated in the Bandra area of Mumbai. This religious site holds a significant celebration on the first Sunday following the 8th of September, which coincides with the birthday of the Virgin Mary. This celebration extends into a week-long event known locally as the Bandra Fair and draws thousands of attendees. Many individuals embark on pilgrimages to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount with the intention of praying for their wishes, known as "mannat," to be fulfilled.

The basilica is perched atop a hill, approximately 80 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. It serves as a destination for numerous devotees and pilgrims year after year. Numerous believers have attested to the extraordinary powers attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The shrine welcomes people of various faiths who seek to express gratitude or request favors from the Virgin Mary through their prayers.

Historically, the church faced destruction in 1738 during an attack by the Marathas. During the Bandra Fair, the entire vicinity is adorned with colorful decorations and banners. Numerous vendors set up stalls to sell religious items, roasted chickpeas, snacks, and sweets. Kiosks offer wax figures of the Virgin Mary, along with candles shaped like hands, feet, and other body parts. Those who are ill or suffering select a candle or wax figure corresponding to their ailment and light it within the church, hoping that Mother Mary will consider their pleas for assistance.
