Museo Interactivo Mirador, Santiago

The Mirador Interactive Museum (MIM) stands as a prominent Chilean science museum. While situated in Santiago city, its influence extends nationwide through traveling exhibitions. The MIM holds a vital role in promoting scientific exploration and education.

MIM's genesis dates back to 1995 when First Lady Marta Larraechea founded Fundación Tiempos Nuevos to promote arts and culture. As the country's first interactive science museum, MIM opened on March 4, 2000. It has since become a prominent attraction for children and youth in Chile and Latin America.

The museum is an architectural marvel, blending steel, concrete, wood, glass, and copper within a 7,000-square-meter brutalist-style edifice in La Granja's República de Brasil Park. It features the Universe Tunnel Building, an expansion with 700 square meters of exhibition space and 40+ interactive modules dedicated to astronomy. The complex includes an 11-hectare park for picnics and recreation, a casino-cafeteria, and 500 parking spaces for visitors' convenience.

Adjacent to the central building stands the Time Tunnel building, housing around three hundred interactive modules that enthrall visitors with scientific wonders, sparking curiosity and learning. The architect Juan Baixas is credited with this captivating design, recognized with the Prize for the best architecture project at the Chilean Architecture Biennial in 2000 and awarded a special distinction at the Ibero-American Biennial of Quito, Ecuador, in 2005. Lastly, the Workshop's architectural splendor comes courtesy of the talented architect Martín Hurtado.

Against all odds, the settlers rebuilt Santiago from ashes.
