Museum of Fine Arts, Alexandria
The Museum of Fine Arts presents a quieter side of the city’s cultural life, away from the ancient ruins and waterfront monuments that often dominate a visit. Its story began in 1904, when German collector Eduard Friedheim donated 210 artworks on the condition that a museum be created. After its later villa home was bombed in 1940, the collection was saved and stored until the present museum opened in the 1950s.
The museum’s collection brings together Egyptian, Middle Eastern, and European art, from paintings and prints to sculpture and decorative pieces. Its displays reflect modern Egyptian work, European academic styles, and Orientalist themes. Among its less expected highlights are works attributed to 18th-century Venetian painter Giambattista Tiepolo. Its art library also holds a rare copy of Description de l’Égypte, produced after Napoleon Bonaparte’s expedition to Egypt.
The museum is closely linked to the Alexandria Biennale for Mediterranean countries, first held in the 1950s and long associated with regional artistic dialogue. It has also been recognized by UNESCO and ICOM for its public services, workshops, and community arts programs. Renovation work in the 2010s improved its galleries, workshop spaces, and garden, making it a compact stop shaped by art, patronage, and wartime survival.
