Museum of Literature and Performing Arts, Sarajevo

Museum of Literature and Performing Arts, Sarajevo

The Museum of Literature and Performing Arts introduces visitors to the writers, playwrights, and theater makers who shaped Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural life. Founded in 1961 (and expanded to include theater arts in 1977), the museum preserves manuscripts, letters, photographs, and stage ephemera that trace the country’s literary and dramatic traditions through turbulent decades.

Inside a historic townhouse with a quiet courtyard, you’ll find thoughtfully arranged rooms that spotlight figures from different eras-Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić among them-alongside lesser-known voices that reveal the region’s multilingual, multiethnic tapestry. The holdings span dozens of literary and theatrical collections and more than 20,000 items, giving an unusually intimate view of how books were written, plays were staged, and ideas circulated in Sarajevo and beyond.

The museum also hosts Galerija “Mak”, an exhibition space opened in 1992 that presents rotating shows-often drawing from the archives-to connect past masters with contemporary creators. It’s an easy stop to pair with nearby Bascarsija sights; plan a relaxed hour to read display captions, linger over original pages and production photos, and step into the garden for a breather between galleries.

Practical details-current hours, small entry fee, and occasional special programs-are listed by the local tourism board and on the museum’s channels. If you’re keen on cultural history or simply want to understand Sarajevo beyond its postcard views, this compact museum offers a clear, human-scaled introduction before you dive into cafés, bookshops, and theaters around the corner.
