National Museum of American Jewish History, Philadelphia
The National Museum of American Jewish History, located in Philadelphia, offers a comprehensive exploration of the Jewish experience in America. Founded in 1976, the museum initially shared a building with Congregation Mikveh Israel. By 2005, plans were set for a relocation to a new, state-of-the-art facility at Fifth Street and Market Street on the Independence Mall. In 2007, architect James Polshek designed a 100,000-square-foot building with glass and terra-cotta elements, an atrium, exhibit space, a Center for Jewish Education, and a theater. Leslie E. Robertson Associates handled structural engineering.
The museum's grand opening on November 14, 2010, was a significant event, drawing over a thousand attendees, including notable figures like Vice President Joe Biden, Mayor Michael Nutter, Governor Ed Rendell, and Rabbi Irving Greenberg. It opened its doors to the public on November 26, 2010. A significant moment in the museum's history came in November 2021 when it was renamed The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in honor of a substantial donation from Stuart Weitzman.
The museum's collection, comprising over 30,000 objects spanning from the Colonial era to the present, underpins its exhibits. These exhibits chronicle the lives and contributions of American Jews, with past features on Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Leonard Bernstein. Professor Jonathan Sarna of Brandeis University was instrumental in developing the museum's core exhibit.
A notable aspect of the museum is the National Museum of American Jewish History Hall of Fame, established in 2010. This Hall of Fame, along with the related permanent exhibition gallery, celebrates notable Jewish Americans. The exhibit includes a film about the inductees and significant artifacts like Sandy Koufax’s baseball mitt and Irving Berlin's sheet music.
