Netherlands Carillon, Arlington

Netherlands Carillon, Arlington

The Netherlands Carillon, standing at 127 feet (39 meters), is a notable campanile located in Arlington County. It houses a 53-bell carillon and was gifted by the people of the Netherlands to the United States in the 1950s. This gesture was to express gratitude for the U.S.'s role in the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II and for the economic assistance that followed.

The carillon is positioned in Arlington Ridge Park, part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service owns and manages the site. The location offers sweeping views of the Potomac River, Washington, D.C., the National Mall, and Arlington National Cemetery. Situated near the Marine Corps War Memorial, the carillon attracts around 1.2 million visitors each year, including many from nearby residential areas like Rosslyn.

The carillon automatically plays the Westminster Quarters throughout the day. It also hosts special performances on significant Dutch and American cultural dates and a summer concert series featuring visiting carillonists, organized by director-carillonist Edward Nassor.
