New Jersey Safe Deposit and Trust Building, Camden

New Jersey Safe Deposit and Trust Building, Camden

New Jersey Safe Deposit and Trust Building is a late 19th-century financial landmark that reflects Camden’s rise as a banking and legal centre. The company was organized in November 1886 after a state act passed earlier that year and was the first institution of its kind in New Jersey. Completed between 1886 and 1888, the building belonged to a period when local financial institutions used architecture to project security, permanence, and civic ambition.

Designed by local architect Arthur Truscott, the building is a strong example of Victorian Eclectic design with Richardsonian Romanesque influence. Its red brick, brownstone trim, arched windows, and compact corner form give it a solid, businesslike presence. After a 1902 merger with the Security Trust Company, it became known as the Security Trust Building, though banking operations there eventually ceased in 1949.

Added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 24, 1990, the building is part of the “Banks, Insurance, and Legal Buildings in Camden” thematic group. This earlier Victorian structure should not be confused with the larger 1929 Camden Safe Deposit & Trust building. After vacancy and severe deterioration, including a 2003 “10 Most Endangered” listing, the building later underwent stabilization and restoration efforts, with notable work carried out in 2010.
