St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Camden

St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Camden

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is one of the older religious landmarks in Camden’s historic core, founded in the 1830s as the city was growing into a transport, industrial, and commercial centre. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was seen as a major local landmark, standing alongside banks, insurance buildings, and civic institutions as a sign of stability during the city’s rapid expansion.

Although the church now has a strong Gothic Revival appearance, its architecture developed in stages. The original 1835 building was designed by Gideon Stivers and was more modest than the structure seen today. The transept and chancel were added in 1856, while the two stone towers came later, in 1910, replacing an earlier wooden spire. Its pointed arches, stained glass, stonework, and vertical lines give the building a traditional church character shaped by both faith and urban history.

The parish is also known for its community work. Locally called the “Pancake House,” St. Paul’s has hosted a weekly Sunday breakfast programme since the late 1980s. It has also partnered with the Rutgers School of Nursing–Camden on a community health clinic, opened in early 2021 to serve underserved and homeless residents. Together, these efforts show the church as both a historic landmark and an active place of local care.
