A. S. Woodruff and Law Building, Camden
The A. S. Woodruff and Law Building is a pair of attached early-20th-century commercial buildings created for the legal profession. Built in 1920, it reflects a period when the downtown area served as an important centre for law, insurance, banking, and civic business in South Jersey. The buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, recognising both their architectural character and their link to local professional history.
They are also part of a Multiple Property Submission to the National Register titled Banks, Insurance, and Legal Buildings in Camden, New Jersey, 1873–1938. This means they are officially grouped with other nearby landmarks, including the Wilson Building and the National State Bank, to tell a wider story of Camden’s rise as the legal and financial heart of South Jersey. Architecturally, the complex is modest but carefully composed, with a three-storey brick form, balanced windows, and Colonial Revival and Georgian Revival details suited to professional offices of the period.
The name recalls A. S. Woodruff, a local political and legal figure who had offices here and later served as vice-chancellor for the county. For tourists, the appeal lies in noticing how a compact office building can reveal a broader civic story. Rather than standing out through size or heavy ornament, it represents the professional networks that shaped legal, business, and political life in the area.
