City Hall, Camden
Camden City Hall is one of the city’s most visible civic buildings and a reminder of the period when Camden was growing as an industrial, legal, and administrative centre. Construction began in 1929 and finished in 1931. Designed by Alfred Green and Byron Edwards, it remains Camden’s tallest building and one of New Jersey’s notable municipal towers.
The building combines a broad six-story base with a slender 18-story tower rising above it. Its light gray granite exterior, restrained Art Deco details, and large clock give it a formal but practical character. Visitors can notice the engraved inscriptions on the façades, including phrases such as “Knowledge is power,” “Right makes might,” and the Walt Whitman line “In a dream I saw a city invincible,” now closely associated with Camden’s civic identity.
Another feature worth observing is the pair of large bronze reliefs created in 1930 by E. Vonhebel. One relief shows an early, pre-industrial view of the region, while the other presents modern Camden with dense buildings and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Together, they make City Hall a useful visual marker of the city’s civic pride, public art, and 20th-century urban ambitions.
