Plaza Hotel, Camden

Plaza Hotel, Camden

The Plaza Hotel was built in 1927 as the Plaza Club Hotel, reflecting a period when the surrounding commercial district was still closely tied to business travel, industry, and civic life. For decades, it served visitors, workers, and local guests who came through the area during Camden’s busy manufacturing years. The hotel was remodelled in 1947 and again in 1950, showing the owner’s confidence that the city would remain an important industrial centre.

Architecturally, the former hotel stood out as a six-story building with exposed brick walls and white Neo-Gothic roofline details. These gabled details gave the upper façade a formal look, while the brick exterior kept the building practical. Its size made it a noticeable hotel from Camden’s early 20th-century commercial life.

The building closed in 1985 and later remained vacant for many years. By 2013, demolition had been approved, and later accounts note that the structure was razed in 2014. For tourists, the Plaza Hotel is therefore best understood as a vanished landmark: a reminder of the city’s hotel culture, its industrial confidence in the early and mid-20th century, and the changing fortunes of older commercial buildings.
