John Cheney House, Camden

John Cheney House, Camden

John Cheney House is a late 19th-century residential landmark within the Cooper Street Historic District. Built around 1892, it reflects a period when this area was a preferred address for wealthy professionals and civic leaders. Its main owner, John W. Cheney, was a Philadelphia/Camden business leader; he and his wife, Mary Truscott Cheney, also had a family connection to architect Arthur Truscott, as Mary was his aunt.

Although often treated as one landmark, the site consists of three separate townhouses designed to read as one grand composition. Arthur Truscott, working with William Lloyd Baily, used Chateauesque details such as a gabled mansard roof and a circular west-side tower, which unites the row and gives it a castle-like presence.

For tourists, the houses show Camden’s refined residential past and the architectural variety of Cooper Street. Truscott also designed the Camden Fire Insurance Association Building and the Colonial Revival-style William T. Read House from 1903. A mansion he designed for his brother was demolished in the 1920s for the Walt Whitman Hotel, while the Cheney Houses’ preserved façades are now part of the LEAP Academy Charter School campus.
