Nihon Mingeikan Art Museum, Tokyo

The Japan Folk Crafts Museum, also known as the Nihon Mingeikan Art Museum, is situated in Komaba, Tokyo. This museum is dedicated to showcasing the handcrafted art created by ordinary people, a concept known as "mingei." It stands out from the modern buildings in its surroundings due to its traditional architecture, exuding a warm and timeless charm. It is rightfully considered one of Japan's cultural treasures.

The term "mingei" was coined by philosopher Soetsu Yanagi and his contemporaries to describe the "folk craft of the people." They celebrated the beauty found in everyday objects created by anonymous craftsmen. These craftsmen employed techniques that were on the brink of becoming obsolete, as they faced competition from mass-produced industrial goods.

The museum's inception dates back to 1936 when it was founded by Yanagi Sōetsu, the pioneer of the mingei movement. After Yanagi, Hamada Shōji took over as its director. Their vision to establish a museum dedicated to folk crafts was officially announced in 1926. Construction of the museum commenced in 1935 and was successfully completed in 1936.

The museum occupies an area of 1,818 square meters and was constructed using traditional Japanese architectural styles. A stone-roofed gate and residence combination, known as "nagaya-mon," was transported from Tochigi Prefecture and reconstructed in front of the main building.

The museum's diverse collection includes ceramics, textiles, and various handcrafted items from different regions of Japan, as well as pieces from China, Korea, the United States, and various European countries.
