Ninna-ji Temple, Kyoto

Ninna-ji – the Buddhist temple that's like a nobleman's playground! Picture this: a retired emperor decides, "Why not turn my palace into a temple?" And just like that, in the year 888, Ninna-ji was born, hosting a dynasty of imperial princes for almost a thousand years.

Now a World Heritage site, this palace is the epitome of aristocratic elegance, rebuilt in 1915 after a fiery mishap but maintaining its leisurely old charm. Inside, the Abbot’s Quarters are decked out with paintings by modern artists, and there's even an altar room on a slight incline for a prime view of the estate, with its wooden buildings and charming pond garden.

As you strut in, prepare to be dazzled by a massive floral display courtesy of the ancient Omuro School of ikebana-those guys sure know how to arrange some flowers! And at the heart of it all, there's a building dripping in gold-leaf paintings, overseeing a pond scene straight out of a fairy tale.

Oh, and let's not forget about the Niomon Gate-because what's a royal palace without a grand entrance? Despite a bit of rough-and-tumble during the Onin War, Ninna-ji got a glow-up, complete with a pagoda straight out of the 1630s and cherry trees that bloom fashionably late, just like that one friend who's always fashionably late to parties.

Translated as "Heavenly Benevolence," Ninna-ji's name says it all. After a visit, you'll be floating on cloud nine, wondering why you ever bothered with the real world.
