Palace of the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, Pisa
The Opera della Primaziale building is situated in Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo) in Pisa, positioned on the north side to the right of the Campo Santo. It used to serve as the administrative headquarters for the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, the organization responsible for managing the Pisa Cathedral and its surrounding monumental complex. Since 2014, it has been utilized for hosting temporary art exhibitions.
On its façade, there are visible features such as a Medici coat of arms, marble panels displaying the initials of the Opera del Duomo, an eighteenth-century plaque commemorating Charles VIII of France's visit in 1494, and another plaque from 1926 that commemorates the visit of Benito Mussolini (the latter is currently undergoing restoration).
Inside the building, there are various decorations, albeit scattered and representing different artistic styles and time periods. Among the notable artworks, there is a rare Byzantine fresco known as "Madonna and Child," which was painted by an Italian and foreign artist before the artistic innovations brought about by Cimabue and Giotto in the early fourteenth century.
Additionally, the interior features other frescoes, including "Pentecost" by Giovan Battista Tempesti, "Coronation of Maria del Pomarancio," and vault decorations by Agostino Ghirlanda in the "Loggetta" on the ground floor, dating back to 1550.
Notably, the chapel within the building boasts stucco work by Angelo Somazzi and Giuseppe Ferri, along with frescoes created by Ranieri Allegranti in 1783.
