Palais Pallavicini, Vienna

The Palais Pallavicini is currently inhabited by the family for whom it was named, having acquired it in 1842. Constructed in the late 18th century, the palace originally bore the name of its initial proprietors, the Fries family. In fact, it is sometimes still referred to as the Palais Fries-Pallavicini. Notably, it was the first neo-classical edifice to grace Vienna.

Interestingly, its aesthetic splendor went largely unappreciated during its early years, prompting the addition of a substantial Baroque gate to placate the neighbors. Nonetheless, the architectural design proved to be splendid and has endured the passage of time admirably. The neo-classical interior has undergone some renovations, leaving only a few remnants. However, the parquet floors remain exquisite, and the chandeliers continue to exude their exquisite charm.

The palace also houses a museum dedicated to Salvador Dali, along with hosting various public events and concerts. Those fond of classic cinema may recognize the Palais from Orson Welles' film, "The Third Man," where it served as the residence of the character Harry Lime. It's noteworthy that the palace was intelligently designed with a section dedicated to apartments available for rent, a clever means to support the maintenance of this grand edifice. The Palais is conveniently situated at Josefsplatz 5, just across from the Austrian National Library.
