Palazzo Fontana-Busdraghi (Fontana-Busdraghi Palace), Lucca
The Fontana-Busdraghi Palace, also known as Palazzo Brancoli Busdraghi, is a historic building located at the intersection of Via Busdraghi and Via Fillungo in Lucca. Its prominent facade on Via Fillungo dates back to the 16th century and features a grand portal flanked by columns and wooden doors adorned with the Busdraghi family coats of arms.
The palace and its garden have a distinctive trapezoidal shape, a characteristic inherited from the medieval urban layout of the area. In 1630, the property was acquired by Francesco Busdraghi, and records from the latter half of the century confirm the existence of a garden enclosed by high perimeter walls topped with a balustrade or "walkway." This elevated walkway remains accessible today and is supported within the garden by a small loggia.
Following the extinction of the Busdraghi family in 1836, the palace was inherited by the Brancoli family, who incorporated the Busdraghi name, renaming it Palazzo Brancoli Busdraghi. This transition is commemorated by the Brancoli Busdraghi coats of arms displayed inside the building and a plaque affixed to the exterior.
Today, while the palace retains its historical charm, a portion of the building serves as a tourist accommodation facility. The Fontana-Busdraghi Palace remains an architectural and cultural landmark in Lucca, drawing visitors interested in its storied past and elegant design.

Lucca's City Wall and Gates
As one of Italy's Città d'arte's (arts towns), Lucca is famous, among other things, for its well-preserved ancient walls encircling the historic center. From about 570 AD until 1847 the city had been the center of the Longobard administration and the capital of old Tuscany, and as such required a defense system to render it an impenetrable fortress.
