Penang State Museum and Art Gallery, George Town

The Penang State Museum occupies a white colonial-era building on Farquhar Street, on a site used by Penang Free School from 1821 to 1927. The surviving structure was built in stages in 1896 and 1906, later housed Hutchings School, and became the state museum in 1965. Part of the earlier complex was destroyed during the Second World War. Following more than nine years of restoration, the museum officially reopened on 23 July 2026.

The museum explores Penang’s history, customs, and traditions through the experiences of its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan, and European communities. Its wide-ranging collections include photographs, documents, videos, costumes, furniture, porcelain, weapons, musical instruments, cooking utensils, ceremonial objects, and carefully labelled displays. Reconstructions of traditional houses help place everyday objects within their original cultural settings.

Immediately after passing under the tall white colonnaded portico at the main entrance, you'll be met by the ground-floor cultural galleries, where room-by-room displays showcase Peranakan bridal costumes, traditional Malay woodcarvings, and historic clan artifacts.

On the upper floor, the history gallery offers a visual journey through old Penang. Among its highlights are early 19th-century watercolours by Captain Robert Smith, an engineer with the East India Company, together with historic prints showing the island’s changing landscapes. To see these art pieces, ascend the staircase to the upper-level gallery wing, where early maps, trade documents, and Robert Smith’s landscape watercolours hang along the high-ceilinged hall.

The restored building is an attraction in its own right, with tall arched windows, decorative plasterwork, and a domed turret. The institution’s State Art Gallery at nearby Dewan Sri Pinang presents modern and contemporary works dating from 1965 onward, including paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, and ceramics.
