Praca do Marco Zero (Marco Zero Square), Recife

Praca do Marco Zero (Marco Zero Square), Recife (must see)

Praça do Marco Zero is the symbolic starting point from which Pernambuco’s road distances are measured. Set beside the waterfront, it reflects the old port area’s role in trade, urban growth, and public life, while today serving as one of Recife’s key open spaces.

At the centre of the square is the ground marker that gives the place its name, designed with a compass rose by artist Cícero Dias. The compass rose is not his only major presence nearby: a short walk from the square, visitors can also find his large mural, Eu vi o mundo... ele começava no Recife — “I saw the world... it started in Recife.” Originally painted in the late 1920s, the work became an important statement of Brazilian modernism and reflects Dias’s imaginative connection to his home region.

Across the water, the Francisco Brennand Sculpture Park adds another visual layer to the setting. Its best-known work is the Crystal Column, or Torre de Cristal, inspired by a flower discovered by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. When the sculpture was first unveiled, its shape caused debate among locals, who saw it as too openly phallic. This reaction was not entirely surprising, since Brennand’s work often explored sensual and provocative forms; the artist later made slight modifications to the piece.

The square is also strongly linked to public gatherings. It hosts concerts, Carnival events, festivals, and civic celebrations, turning the space into a large outdoor stage at different times of year. For tourists, Praça do Marco Zero offers a compact introduction to Recife’s layered identity: colonial trade, port activity, modern cultural projects, public art, and popular celebration all meet in one open waterfront setting.
