Precinct of Amun-Re, Luxor

Precinct of Amun-Re, Luxor

The Precinct of Amun-Re is one of the primary temple enclosures within the vast Karnak Temple Complex, alongside three others. Among these, it reigns supreme both in size and accessibility to the public. Dedicated to the chief deity of the Theban Triad, Amun, embodied as Amun-Re, this precinct spans approximately 250,000 square meters, boasting a plethora of structures and monuments.

At its heart lies the Temple of Amun, sprawling across 61 acres. While much of the complex is open for exploration, certain sections remain closed or partially accessible due to ongoing excavation and restoration efforts. The North-South Axis, comprising the 8th, 9th, and 10th pylons, is among these areas. The southeast corner is partially restricted, while the northwest corner houses a museum requiring an additional ticket for entry.

In the expansive southwest lies an open-air assembly zone, scattered with millions of stone fragments ranging from petite to colossal, neatly arranged in lengthy rows, patiently awaiting their restoration into their original monuments. Despite its open nature, this area hosts the temples of Khons and Opet, accessible to the public, albeit they receive fewer visitors compared to the bustling Karnak. Additionally, nestled within is the Akhenaten Temple Project housed in a securely sealed elongated structure, safeguarding remnants of the disassembled Temple of Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten).

The complex sprawls across a vast open area, housing the Karnak Open Air Museum within its boundaries. Comprising four main sections, only the largest is currently accessible to the public.
