Pasar Burung (Bird Market), Denpasar

Pasar Burung, or the Bird Market, is a small traditional animal market where visitors can see how songbirds and pets are bought, sold, and discussed in everyday local life. The place is usually noisy, with birds calling from cages, vendors talking to customers, and buyers checking the birds’ appearance and sound. Birds have cultural value in Bali and Java, where keeping a songbird has long been associated with leisure, pride, and social status.

Many birds sold here are kept for their song, and some are bought by people involved in local singing competitions. Certain birds are used as burung masteran, or “master birds,” placed near younger birds so they can learn specific notes. Research at the market has recorded more than 140 bird species, showing the scale of the trade and the presence of birds from different parts of Indonesia, including Sumatra and Papua. Around the stalls, visitors may also find bird feed, bamboo cages, ornamental fish, rabbits, reptiles, and other small animals.

This is not a polished tourist attraction, but a working market with narrow aisles, strong smells, noise, and basic conditions. Visitors may find some cages cramped, and the songbird trade raises conservation concerns when birds are wild-caught. Nearby palace and temple grounds add visual contrast, and traders may pause during major ceremonies. Toward dusk, the area can shift into a casual food-stall gathering place.
