Saint Nicholas Church, Belgrade

Saint Nicholas Church is a historic Baroque church located in the heart of Zemun’s Old Town. It stands on the site of an earlier wooden Serbian Orthodox church dating back to the 16th century. Construction of the present building began in 1745 and was completed in 1752.

The church is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse and choir gallery, all covered by a barrel vault. On its western side rises a two-story bell tower crowned by a metal-covered spire. Designed in the Baroque style, the church displays architectural features typical of 18th-century churches found throughout the Vojvodina region and along the former Military Frontier. The northern and southern façades are reinforced by buttresses, adding both structural support and visual character to the building.

Saint Nicholas Church holds the distinction of being the oldest Orthodox church in Zemun’s historic center and one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in the Belgrade area.

Step inside to admire the church’s richly decorated interior. Its centerpiece is a tall, elaborately carved Baroque iconostasis, regarded as one of the finest examples of its kind in Serbian art of the period. Created by Aksentije Marković, it features icons painted in 1762 by renowned Serbian icon painter Dimitrije Bačević. The church also contains mural compositions by Živko Petrović, along with historic icons, banners and other artifacts reflecting Zemun’s cultural and religious heritage.

The church treasury preserves an important collection of 18th- and 19th-century icons and other precious religious objects, including relics of Saint Andrew.
