Big Square and Market, Belgrade
Big Square is the oldest public square in Zemun and has long been a focal point of the Old Town’s commercial and social life. Its modern layout began taking shape in 1784, when an earlier Catholic church was demolished and new buildings, including the City School and Parish Office, were constructed. Together with nearby Gardoš and the Millennium Tower, the square forms part of Zemun’s historic urban core.
As you step into the open expanse of Big Square, pause to take in the historic civic architecture framing the square. Particularly appealing are the 18th-century buildings lining its northwestern corner.
Commerce has played an equally important role in the area. The adjoining Zemun Market continues a centuries-old trading tradition, with produce historically arriving from the fertile surroundings of Zemun and neighboring villages, while fishermen brought their catch from the Danube. Until the early 20th century, the area also served as an important grain market.
Today, the market remains one of the best places to experience everyday life in Zemun. Wander among rows of stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, and look out for the flea-market section, where antiques, collectibles and unusual 20th-century objects occasionally appear.
The square itself has evolved into one of Zemun’s favorite gathering places. Outdoor film screenings, concerts, art performances, church gatherings and other cultural events regularly bring the historic surroundings to life.
Before continuing deeper into the Old Town, find a spot along the edge of the square or at one of the outdoor cafés and take a moment to observe the lively local atmosphere. A highlight is Petrović Bakery, which serves traditional Serbian sweet and savory pastries on the ground floor of an elegant historic building with a distinctive mansard roof.
