San Giorgio in Braida, Verona
The San Giorgio in Braida stands as a Roman Catholic Church positioned close to the Adige River. This church is situated on the remnants of a place of worship from the eighth century, which was dedicated to Saint George. Later, in the eleventh century, it underwent a transformation into a Benedictine monastery.
The construction of the current church took place between 1536 and 1543, under the guidance of the esteemed architect and engineer Michele Sanmicheli, who was renowned during his time. Sanmicheli was responsible for the design of significant structures like Palazzo Pompei, Palazzo Canossa, Palazzo Bevilacqua, Cappella Pellegrini, and Ponte Nuovo.
Italian churches are notable not just for their impressive architecture, but also for the artistic treasures housed within them. The church consists of a central aisle and eight smaller chapels, divided by two pillars. Its design features a Renaissance-style dome and bell tower, both also conceived by Sanmicheli.
Within the sanctuary, notable artworks are displayed, including Paolo Veronese's depiction of the Martyrdom of Saint George, Tintoretto's painting showcasing the Baptism of Christ, and sculptures of Saint George and Saint Lorenzo crafted by Giustiniani. Additionally, the church boasts a collection of artworks by other talented artists like Caroto, Brusasorci, and Girolamo dai Libri. Close by, you'll find the Villa InCanto Opera Lirica, Villa in Canto, and the Church Santa Maria in Organo.
