Biblioteca Capitolare, Verona

Biblioteca Capitolare, Verona

Biblioteca Capitolare, once known as the foremost collection of religious texts, is a notable library holding one of the world's most significant compilations of religious literature. Its establishment dates back to the fifth century when it was created as a writing space for the "Schola Sacerdotum Sanctae Veronesis Ecclesiae."

In the era before the invention of printing, a scriptorium was crucial for copying texts that would later become part of the library. The library is situated at Piazza Duomo, adjacent to the Canonical Museum and close to the Stone Bridge and Verona Cathedral.

This library emerged during the spread of Christianity in Europe, providing scholars with a location to preserve important documents. Among its contents are over 1,500 manuscripts, including legal and civil documents. Many items in the collection were contributed through donations. Notable works like Virgilio, the Evangeliario Purpureo, Saint Augustine's City of God, and ancient parchments from the 700s are among the treasures held by the library. Additionally, the library possesses the comprehensive and contemporary Roman legal code written by Gaius.

Regularly, the library holds exhibitions and conferences for the public, as well as training sessions for schools.
