Satkhanda, Lucknow

Satkhanda, Lucknow

Satkhanda Tower, whose name literally means “seven-storeyed,” was commissioned between 1837 and 1842 by Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah as an elegant watchtower overlooking the old city. Though intended to rise to seven levels, construction halted after the Nawab’s untimely death, and only four storeys were completed. Despite remaining unfinished, the building remains distinctive in form and proportion.

Architecturally, Satkhanda showcases a fascinating blend of Islamic, Greek, and European influences, with a stout octagonal base, triple‑arched windows, and tapering upper levels. Many compare its silhouette to the Leaning Tower of Pisa - not for tilt, but for its graceful tiers of diminishing breadth. A winding spiral staircase inside offers access to an open pavilion at the top, with partial views over historic surroundings and the architectural charm of old Lucknow.
