Schloss Rosenberg (Rosenberg Castle), Zell am See

Schloss Rosenberg (Rosenberg Castle), Zell am See (must see)

Schloss Rosenberg, also known as Rosenberg Castle, is one of the main historic buildings near the area of the Hundertwasser Austria Fountain. It offers a contrast to the nearby lakeside art, showing the town’s older civic and noble character. Its central position also makes it unusual among Salzburg-style manor houses in Pinzgau.

Built in 1577 by the brothers Karl and Hans Rosenberger, the castle rose on a site once linked to a wine estate, reflecting the area’s earlier economic role. In 1640, the estate gained further noble status when it was acquired by Freiherr Karl Khuen, a member of an influential aristocratic family. Over time, Schloss Rosenberg passed through the hands of regional merchants and noble owners, and was even used briefly as a commercial beer brewery.

Its long private ownership came to an end in 1820, when Franz Lürzer bought the property. After that, the castle moved gradually into public use, first through federal ownership and later through municipal ownership. It served several functions, including private residence, inn, forestry office, mining administration, and district court until 1908. Since 1970, it has served as the town hall, making it both a historic monument and an active civic building.

Schloss Rosenberg follows the Salzburg Ansitz style, with a square plan, corner towers, hipped roof, and plain painted surfaces. Inside, historic vaults remain visible, supported by the 2009 modernization. The first floor has a historic wedding room, while the upper floors host cultural exhibitions. Near the Hundertwasser Austria Fountain, the castle adds a layer of civic history, art, and public memory.
