St. Bonifatius Kirche (St. Bonifatius Church), Heidelberg

St. Bonifatius Church is a Roman Catholic basilica built between 1899 and 1903 to serve the expanding Catholic population of a newly developed residential district. Architect Ludwig Maier designed the building in the Romanesque Revival style, drawing on medieval churches from the Rhineland. It was dedicated on 19 October 1903 and later became the centre of a parish that had grown to more than 8,000 members by 1925.

The exterior is recognised by its broad twin-towered façade, rounded arches and clearly defined transept. Red sandstone details contrast with walls of pale limestone, giving the large structure a patterned appearance. Figures of Saint Boniface and Pope Gregory II stand on the towers, referring to the missionary bishop and the pope who supported his work during the eighth century.

Inside, the three-aisled basilica has a spacious nave, vaulted side aisles and a painted coffered ceiling inspired by the medieval ceiling of St. Michael’s Church in Hildesheim. The Mönch organ, built in 1964 and rebuilt in 1991–92, contains 52 stops and more than 3,500 pipes. Visitors may enter for quiet viewing when services and parish activities allow, but should respect worshippers and any restricted areas.
