St. George's Church, Hyderabad
St. George’s Church is one of the oldest surviving Christian landmarks in the region and reflects an important chapter in the British Residency period. The congregation began in 1844 in a smaller structure known as Christ Church, on land granted by royal decree from the Nizam’s government through the British Resident. It later became an important worship center and remains active today.
The church is known for its restrained Neo-Gothic architecture, with pointed lancet arches, stained-glass windows, polished wooden furnishings, and a tall bell tower. Historical records in the vestry attribute the original design to T. W. Wray, a British postmaster who also supervised the construction. The church’s history also reflects interfaith support under the Nizams, including later patronage associated with Mir Mahbub Ali Khan.
Visitors are often surprised by the church’s peaceful setting, as mature trees and dense greenery conceal much of the building from the surrounding commercial activity. St. George’s Grammar School, founded in 1834 as the Hyderabad Residency School, is older than the church building and remains closely linked to it. The vestry also preserves 19th-century baptism records connected with British residents, officers, and colonial families.
