Lumbini Park, Hyderabad

Lumbini Park, officially T. Anjaiah Lumbini Park, is named after Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Nepal. Its lawns, fountains, walking paths, and lake views make it a convenient place for a short sightseeing break. Near the entrance, visitors can see a large floral clock made with seasonal plants, cacti, flowers, and rocks.

The park is best known for boat rides across Hussain Sagar toward the monolithic Gautama Buddha statue on Gibraltar Rock. The statue stands about 58 feet tall, weighs around 350 tons, and was carved from a single block of white granite. Its installation history includes a serious accident on March 10, 1990, when the transport barge capsized, the statue sank, and 10 workers and engineers lost their lives. It was recovered intact in 1992 and formally consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 2006.

In the evening, the park becomes lively with visitors gathering for the musical fountain and laser show. The show uses a high-pressure water screen for projected visual sequences, often linked with regional history and culture. The surrounding Hussain Sagar Lake is also notable for its heart-like outline; in 2012, the UNWTO recognized it as the “Heart of the World.”
