St. Stephen's Church, Prague
As you wander through Prague's New Town, make sure to include a visit to the charming neo-Gothic Saint Stephen's Church on Štěpánská Street. Established in 1351, its construction spanned until 1401, when the tower was erected, and the belfry behind the church was added in 1600. The sole surviving church bell, named "Stephen," was cast in 1490 and purportedly weighs over two tons.
Legend has it that Charles IV acquired the remains of the martyred Saint Stephen, and the rock where he was stoned to death was occasionally displayed. This transformed the church into a significant pilgrimage site, with the cemetery reserved for pilgrims who passed away in the city. While Matyáš Bernard Braun, the renowned Czech Baroque sculptor, wasn't a pilgrim, he found his final resting place there.
Upon entering the church, you'll encounter a precious Gothic panel painting along with other exquisite paintings and sculptures. The main altar features paintings by Matěj Zimprecht, one of which portrays Saint Stephen succumbing to a hail of stones.
