Statue of Queen Wilhelmina, Hague

Statue of Queen Wilhelmina, Hague

The Statue of Queen Wilhelmina, located at Noordeinde Palace, honors the Netherlands' longest-reigning monarch, who led the country from 1890 to 1948 through significant historical events, including both World Wars and the economic crisis of 1933. She is best known for her leadership during World War II and her dedication to the Dutch people.

The journey to the statue's creation was complex and extended over several decades. In 1963, a year after Queen Wilhelmina's death, a committee was formed to establish a national monument in her honor. Various artists and architects proposed designs ranging from abstract concepts to symbolic structures. However, these designs did not gain widespread approval, leading to a prolonged delay in the monument's realization.

In 1984, a breakthrough happened when an official group proposed using a 1966 plaster model by Charlotte van Pallandt for a Wilhelmina statue in Rotterdam. This preserved model, owned by Hannema de Stuers in Heino, became the basis for the Hague monument. Van Pallandt was inspired by a newspaper photo of Queen Wilhelmina unveiling a sculpture, which featured a unique triangular shape.

In collaboration with urban planner and architect Professor van Embden, the statue's surroundings were thoughtfully designed. The National Wilhelmina Monument was finally unveiled on November 28, 1987, the twenty-fifth anniversary of Wilhelmina's death, by Princess Juliana and Queen Beatrix.
