Sultan's Pool Amphitheatre, Jerusalem
Down the steps from Yemin Moshe lies the Sultan's Pool amphitheatre, Jerusalem's premier live music venue, primarily active during the summer months due to its open-air setting. Originally a reservoir, this historic site has witnessed performances by renowned artists such as Sting and Neil Young, set against the dramatic backdrop of the city walls and citadel. For updates on upcoming concerts, check the venue's website.
The origins of this site date back to the reign of Herod, who built an amphitheatre and pool here, utilizing an aqueduct to supply water to the city. Suleiman the Magnificent later modernized the pool during the 16th century. Remnants of the ancient aqueduct and pool walls are still visible today.
Historically situated in the Valley of Hinnom, where the ancient city of Jerusalem once stood, the valley earned its name from the pagan practices of child sacrifice and later became a site for burning city garbage. These activities led to its Hebrew name, Gehinnom, meaning "hell".
Tips:
For those exploring the area, Khutsot ha-Yoster (Arts & Crafts Lane) awaits at the northern end of Sultan's Pool, offering studios and shops of local artists and artisans. Visitors can stroll through the lane, then ascend to the Jaffa Gate and stroll along the gardens outside the Old City walls to Mount Zion. And if hunger strikes, The Eucalyptus beneath the Jaffa Gate offers a modern twist on traditional cuisine in a charming location by the city walls.
