Sunner im Walfisch, Cologne

Sünner im Walfisch is yet another good place to stop for a taste of Cologne’s traditional Brauhaus culture. The historic building itself dates from the 17th century, while brewing on this site goes back much further, with records of a brewery here as early as 1476.

Once you’re seated, start with a freshly tapped Sünner Kölsch-a pale, top-fermented brew usually served in a tall, narrow glass. It has a light golden color, a gentle maltiness, and a clean, slightly bitter finish. So, if you want to experience Cologne beer style, this is the obvious first order.

If you’d rather sample several local flavors, look for the Kölsche Tapas-Teller. It brings together small portions of traditional foods such as potato pancakes, cheese with rye bread, meatballs, and blood or liver sausages. It’s a useful choice if you’re curious about Rhineland cooking but don’t want to order several separate dishes.

For a full meal, try Himmel & Ääd, or “Heaven and Earth.” The name refers to apples from the trees-heaven-and potatoes from the ground-earth. Here, they are served with fried blood sausage, creating a mix of sweet apple, creamy potato, and rich, savory sausage.

Another regional favorite is Rhenish Sauerbraten, marinated beef served with red cabbage and a potato dumpling. If you’re especially hungry, go for the oven-roasted pork knuckle, served with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. It’s heavy, hearty Brauhaus food, and it pairs naturally with a Kölsch.

But if you’re only stopping for a beer and a quick bite, try a Halve Hahn. Despite the name, which means “half a chicken,” there’s no chicken there. It is actually rye bread with cheese, usually served with onions and mustard. Another very local snack is Mett, raw minced pork served on bread with onions.

So, whether you stay for a full meal or just one Kölsch and a snack, this makes for a particularly traditional Cologne brewery stop.
