Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh

Talbot Rice Gallery serves as the contemporary art gallery affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. It was established in 1975 and is located within the Old College premises of the University, situated in the heart of Edinburgh. This gallery is renowned for its role as a hub for art and intellectual discourse, offering thought-provoking exhibitions within a distinctive historical setting.

Talbot Rice Gallery comprises two distinct exhibition spaces: a contemporary white cube area and a historically significant Georgian gallery. Collaborating with artists from both local and international backgrounds, the gallery typically hosts three to four exhibitions annually and operates a unique Artist in Residence program.

Recent exhibitions have featured individual artists such as Céline Condorelli, Samson Young, Lucy Skaer, and John Akomfrah. Additionally, the gallery has organized ambitious group exhibitions exploring various themes, including female empowerment, the societal changes brought about by the pandemic, and the impact of Brexit on borders. These exhibitions are complemented by a diverse range of events, making the gallery's offerings accessible to a wide audience.

Talbot Rice Gallery relies on fundraising efforts to sustain its artistic endeavors, receiving support from entities like Creative Scotland, as well as international and grant support from organizations such as the Mondriaan Fonds, Culture Ireland, and the Freelands Foundation. Notably, in 2019, the gallery secured an Arts and Humanities Research Council grant for the first time. The Talbot Rice Gallery is open to the public, and admission is free, welcoming visitors to engage with its rich artistic and intellectual offerings.
