Trodelmarkt (Flea Market Island), Nuremberg

Flea Market Island is a small historic island in the Pegnitz River, located between Max Bridge and Fleisch Bridge in Nuremberg’s Old Town. It is connected to the mainland by Charles Bridge, Hangman’s Bridge, and Grinders' Footbridge, while a bridge near the Executioner’s Tower provides access to the tower and its exhibition on the history and work of the city’s executioner.

The island became part of Nuremberg’s fortifications in the early 14th century, when the Lorenzer and Sebalder sides of the Old Town were connected across the Pegnitz. The Executioner’s Tower was built at the island’s western tip as part of these defenses.

A market has existed here since the Middle Ages, when pigs were traded on what was then known as Pig Market. Meat stalls were added in the 15th century, while grinding mills operated on and around the island from about 1440. From the 16th century, residents began trading used and second-hand goods, and the name Flea Market became established in 1809–1810.

The island’s characteristic rows of houses and market stalls were destroyed during the Second World War, but the historic layout was carefully recreated during post-war reconstruction.

Today, Flea Market Island is a picturesque riverside quarter lined with permanent upscale boutique shops. The 1,000-square-metre island also serves as a central hub during Nuremberg’s massive city-wide flea market. This famous event takes place twice a year, lasting two days in May and September. Vendors sell everything from toys and jewellery to antiques and other unusual goods, making it an interesting stop for shoppers and history enthusiasts alike.
