Wat That Luang Neua, Vientiane
Wat That Luang Neua is one of the temples surrounding the stupa of Pha That Luang on its northern side. It is an active monastery and also serves as the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of Lao Buddhism. Visitors often pass through the temple while exploring the wider complex, and it offers a closer look at everyday Buddhist practice beyond the main monument.
The buildings follow traditional Lao temple design. The main hall features a multi-tiered roof with gently sloping lines and decorative details along the edges. At the entrance, naga figures are often placed as symbolic guardians. Inside, Buddha statues are arranged on altars, surrounded by offerings, candles, and wall decorations that reflect Buddhist stories and teachings. The layout supports both ceremonies and quiet moments of prayer.
The grounds include monks’ living quarters, smaller shrines, and shaded courtyards. A large Bodhi tree, believed to descend from the one in Bodh Gaya, stands at the center, surrounded by golden Buddha statues in different poses (mudras). Visitors may see monks and local residents making offerings, especially during festivals such as Boun That Luang, when the temple becomes more active.
